For example, if I mentioned my friend André in a letter, the é could trigger it to (correctly) identify the French - but if it changes the language to French, all of the rest of my letter will be marked with spelling mistakes and have incorrect quotation marks! (In English, pressing " with the smart quote setting on will give you typographical ”quote marks” automatically, but if the language is French, you'll see « quote marks » instead different languages may use other variants.) When the setting is on, Word will make a guess about the language if you type something that may be typical of a different language. Click the "Set as Default" to have the setting applied to your Normal template. To prevent this from happening, use Review > Language and turn off the "Detect language automatically" setting. This is an easy setting to fix, and super annoying if it is unintentionally turned on!
